Which type of leather you opt for depends on what you want from the jacket. If after something buttery soft, prioritise calfskin or lambskin, but bear in mind that it may not be as durable as a thick biker-type hide. A sound alternative to these is goatskin, which manages to be both supple and durable at the same time, not to mention highly water-repellent. Sheepskin is lighter than goat or cow, but isn’t as tough and is used most famously on pilot-style shearling jackets. Lambskin, meanwhile, is favored by many high fashion and luxury labels as it’s the softest and lightest of them all. Soft and pliable, it has a very minor grain that makes it seem smoother than many other options, although poor-quality pigskin can look noticeably cheap.

And as such are perhaps too much of a statement piece for some. The fur lining means that they are very much winter jackets and the fur lining can make you look very bulky. Fatigue jacket: Longer than other leather jackets this style is very relaxed and can be buttoned or zipped – or frequently both. It is more dressed down than a biker and with less hardware. The perfect jacket for wearing outdoors, in the country or walking the dog. This is definitely a piece that will get better the more bashed up it becomes but is probably the least adaptable style if you are looking for a jacket that can be dressed up as well as down.
